Onsite Training Workshops

We provide a wide range of on-site evidence-based training workshops for professionals working at correctional institutions. We are a nationally recognized leader in providing evidence-based training focused on rehabilitation and reentry for justice-impacted individuals.

Advances in evidence-based interventions like CBT have increased the need for criminal justice providers and practitioners to advance their knowledge, skills, and competencies in these interventions. CBT is widely used in criminal justice service settings and has been effective in targeting criminogenic needs and reducing recidivism (Duawe, 2017). This research-based course clearly and concisely describes a motivational and skills-building model and provides a wealth of proven and practical tools and techniques to use in everyday reentry programs.

Substance Use Disorders

Workshop

The majority of people who are incarcerated have a history of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs. Despite advances in effective treatments for addiction, most people in custody don’t receive treatment. Untreated substance use disorders increase the risk of recidivism. This training workshop aims to fill the gap between science and practice by providing correctional counselors with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to deliver evidence-based addiction education and interventions to people completing reentry and rehabilitation programs.

Trauma and PTSD Workshop

Motivational Interviewing Workshop

The challenge of motivating people in custody to change their criminal thinking and behavior has ignited the need for professionals to obtain training in more effective ways to reduce resistance and enhance motivation. Research has identified motivation and resolving mixed feelings about change as key factors in helping people change their old lifestyles. This training workshop course will help professionals learn how to use an MI style in correctional practices. MI will help correctional professionals build the working relationships needed to encourage returning citizens to learn the skills they need to transition back to our communities.

Mental Health Disorders

Workshop

A significant number of people in custody have a history of untreated mental health disorders that contribute to their involvement in the criminal justice system. This training workshop will identify the signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders to help professionals better recognize and treat these disorders in everyday practice. The course will provide facts about mental illness and recovery, definitions of mental illnesses, signs, and symptoms of DSM-5 substance use disorders, and describe types of treatments for mental health disorders. This course will advance your clinical skills in identifying the signs and symptoms of DSM-5 mental health disorders.

A significant number of people in custody have experienced adverse childhood and traumatic experiences prior to being incarcerated. Prolonged exposure to sexual assault, poverty, and violence dramatically contributes to the development of PTSD. Most inmates develop self-destructive ways of coping with past traumatic experiences in their communities. This training workshop will prepare correctional professionals with the tools they need to identify and more effectively manage inmates who have been exposed to past trauma. The workshop will highlight the policies and practices institutions can adopt to become both trauma-informed and help people in custody learn ways to effectively cope with trauma symptoms while incarcerated.

Implementing evidence-based rehabilitation and reentry programs requires training workshops and ongoing coaching support. It's natural to forget some of the materials covered in the training workshops without ongoing online or onsite coaching support. In our recent training of staff at Miami Dade Corrections we provided regular coaching support online via Zoom. These coaching support sessions provided staff with the opportunity to ask questions and share best practices. Our coaching support also includes access to online training materials including staff training manuals. Training manuals provide brief descriptions of the theory and practice of interventions as well as practical tips and tools to implement these best practices.
